Precious Life – Channon Martin

When Jesus goes to the cross to die, he goes to give life, not because he was a criminal. We had a debt we couldn’t pay (sin), so God sent his Son Jesus to pay that debt for us so that we could have eternal life in him. Jesus died the ultimate death so that we could have eternal life because of his sacrifice. After dying and being placed in a tomb, three days go by. On the third day, Jesus is resurrected. By his resurrection, Jesus inevitably defeats death once and for all. At defeating death, Jesus gives life to those who would follow him. This sacrifice required nothing of us, but all of Him. God didn’t need us to be good enough to have him send his Son. God didn’t need us to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps so he could eventually send his Son. God sent his Son and it cost him everything. Jesus paid the ultimate penalty so we wouldn’t have to. At receiving Christ into our lives, we are his. Death does not reign over us because we have received life from Jesus. We are able to live even after we die because of His death. We receive eternal life from Jesus’ sacrifice. Eternal is forever. Now, what does this have to do with the preciousness of life? I’m glad you asked.

Maybe you think your life is worthless. If that’s the case, then why would God send his Son to die for us? If we are worthless, then God wouldn’t pay the ultimate penalty so we could have eternal life in him. In the grand scheme of things, life is short. One Sunday with our youth, I told them the difference between joy and happiness. In our culture, we tend to blend words and they eventually lose their meaning. Happiness is fleeting and can be taken away with one phone call. You could be happy one minute, but receive a phone call the next that your brother or someone else you love has died and that happiness can be stripped from you. Happiness is temporary, but joy is forever. The life we receive from Jesus is a life of joy. Jesus never promised that life would be easy after we follow him, but we are given an eternal joy that cannot be take away from us. No phone call can take away the joy that Christ gave to us by his death on the cross. You’re not worthless. Life is not cheap. Life is precious and if you need proof, look at the reason Jesus went to the cross. Jesus died to give life to those who were dead. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re worthless. Life is precious and Jesus proved that when he died and was raised again to grant life eternal in Him.
